A heartbreaking incident unfolded Saturday evening on the Cuyahoga River near Gorge Metro Park in Cuyahoga Falls. A father and his 5-year-old son were using an inflatable inner tube when it overturned in swift, high water caused by recent heavy rainfall.
Emergency crews from multiple departments across Summit County responded immediately. Due to darkness and hazardous river conditions, the initial search was suspended overnight.
On Sunday morning, search teams recovered the body of the young boy. The father remains missing as of Sunday night, and the search is scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. Monday. Crews have used specialized equipment, including boats, aerial drones, and dive teams, to assist in the effort.
Officials continue to urge the public to avoid the Cuyahoga River and the surrounding areas of Gorge Metro Park, both for safety reasons and to allow first responders to conduct their work without interference.
The multi-agency operation remains a deeply emotional and logistically complex effort. Our thoughts are with the family during this unimaginable loss.
