The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, has commenced work on a crucial segment of the Vermilion Harbor West Pier, partnering with Chicago-based contractor, Architectural Consulting Group, Ltd. This repair is vital for ensuring that the harbor remains safe for recreational boating and continues to support the local economy.

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) described the project as a significant investment in infrastructure that will not only enhance safety but also boost inter-lake and international trade. She expressed pride in her role in securing the necessary funds, underscoring the importance of Lake Erie to both Northwest Ohio and the entire Great Lakes Region.

Vermilion Mayor Jim Forthofer voiced his appreciation for the efforts of the Army Corps and Kaptur’s continued support, acknowledging that the city could not undertake such a large-scale project without federal assistance.

Melissa Price, Executive Director of Erie MetroParks, also welcomed the repairs, emphasizing that they will improve safety for both boaters and visitors to the area. She mentioned that once the pier restoration is complete, Erie MetroParks plans to launch Phase III of the Wakefield MetroPark beach revitalization in 2025, which will include a new walking path, native plant landscaping, and additional seating.

Lt. Col. Robert Burnham, Commander of the Buffalo District, highlighted the significance of the project in maintaining safe navigation on Lake Erie and ensuring that Vermilion Harbor remains a key economic asset for the region. He credited the success of the project to the strong partnership between the community and government leaders at all levels.

Work on approximately 400 feet of the southern end of the pier at Wakefield MetroPark began on August 12. The $6.3 million project is fully funded by the federal government and is scheduled for completion this fall.
