Officers draw weapons during traffic stop
VERMILION — A 59-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night after failing to stop for Vermilion police along Liberty Avenue, prompting a pursuit that ended near Baumhart Road.
James Kiley was taken into custody shortly before 11:40 p.m. Oct. 6 and turned over to North Ridgeville police, according to a Vermilion Police Department report.
Kiley was booked into the Lorain County Jail at 4:03 a.m. Oct. 7 on a charge of violating a protection order, according to jail records.
Officer Milo Drumm spotted a Dodge Caravan matching the description of a vehicle North Ridgeville police were searching for.
According to the report, North Ridgeville authorities had identified Kiley as potentially armed and dangerous.
Drumm observed the vehicle leaving Domino’s Pizza on Liberty Avenue and traveling east. Detective Nicholas Kowal also located the vehicle and confirmed its registration.
Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens after the vehicle passed Sunnyside Road.
Police said Kiley accelerated and failed to stop, prompting officers to begin a pursuit.
The vehicle stopped near Baumhart Road, where officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop.
Officer Douglas Miller ordered Kiley to turn off the vehicle, exit and keep his hands raised. Kiley complied and was handcuffed without further incident.
Officers checked the vehicle for additional occupants and requested permission to search it, but Kiley declined.
Police arranged for a relative to retrieve the vehicle while Miller transported Kiley to a meeting location, where North Ridgeville officers took custody of him.
The report states that all three officers drew their firearms during the stop, prompting the department to complete a use-of-force form. The incident was recorded on body cameras.
Jail records list a court appearance for Kiley on Oct. 13.
