The Weird and Wonderful World of Vermilion’s Buoy Art

If you’ve visited downtown Vermilion recently, you’ve likely noticed something unusual, quirky, and totally delightful—the famous Buoy Tree. It’s not your average holiday decoration, but a true testament to the creativity of the Vermilion community. Public Art Vermilion (PAV) has taken the humble buoy and turned it into a stunning, community-driven work of art, and this year, it’s bigger and better than ever.

What’s the Deal with Buoys?

You might be wondering—why buoys? The answer is simple: Vermilion is a coastal town, and buoys are part of its maritime charm. But this isn’t just about floating objects. These buoys have been transformed into little works of art, each decorated by residents, organizations, and businesses around the town.

“We’ve got everything from hand-painted designs to stickers, from church groups to businesses—everyone’s involved,” says Janet Hannaway, PAV project coordinator. “It’s the kind of project where anyone can contribute, and you see something different every time you look at it.”

The Art Comes to Life

What makes this art form so captivating is its mix of styles and mediums. From traditional paint to more unconventional approaches like stickers, no two buoys are the same. It’s the kind of project that draws you in with its quirky details and makes you appreciate the creativity of the community.

And the best part? It’s not just about the tree itself. The art form spills into the town, with locals finding new ways to turn these once-forgotten objects into something beautiful and unexpected. The joy of discovery is part of what makes the Buoy Tree a must-see attraction during the holiday season.

New Twists, Same Charm

This year, there are some exciting additions to the Buoy Tree. A new tree topper made from a life ring, combined with holiday greenery and decorations, tops off the display, while 20 extra buoys and white string lights have been added to give the tree an extra sparkle. According to Hannaway, the tree is a perfect blend of old and new. “We’ve kept some elements from last year, but there’s a fresh take on it this year with new buoys and new lighting,” she says.

A Heartwarming Community Effort

The beauty of the Buoy Tree lies not just in its look but in the way it brings the community together. Residents of all ages pitch in to make this display what it is, and the results speak for themselves. It’s a celebration of what happens when people unite to create something fun and festive.

The tree is a hit on social media too, with locals posting photos and sharing their favorite buoys. “Every time someone posts a photo of the tree, it brings out more enthusiasm,” says Hannaway. “People can’t wait to see the next thing that pops up.”

The Perfect Symbol for Vermilion’s Spirit

At the heart of it all, the Buoy Tree represents the unique charm of Vermilion. It’s a quirky, unexpected expression of the town’s community spirit and creativity. And it’s not just for the holidays—locals see it as an annual tradition that grows and evolves, each year bringing new surprises and new ways to engage with the town’s rich culture.

If You Haven’t Seen It Yet, What Are You Waiting For?

So if you haven’t checked out the Buoy Tree yet, now’s the time. Head downtown, grab a hot drink, and take in the wonderfully weird art that has become a beloved holiday tradition for Vermilion locals. It’s guaranteed to leave you feeling festive—and maybe a little inspired to create your own weird art form.
