At its March 5, 2025, meeting, the Vermilion Historic Design and Review Board unanimously approved the proposed exterior updates for a new business at 5693 Liberty Avenue. The applicants, Billy and Emily Levi, plan to revitalize the property as they prepare to open a unique hot dog stand in town. The location has previously hosted Your Last Chance BBQ and Wake Up and Waffle over the last few years.

The Levi family, owners of Fox Creek Family Tennis Center, detailed their vision for the space, which includes fresh exterior painting, landscaping with flowers and ferns, and updated signage that maintains the existing dimensions. Their presentation was met with enthusiasm, particularly regarding the diverse menu they plan to offer.

The hot dog stand will feature a variety of hot dogs, including all-beef, plant-based, and classic options. Additionally, the menu will showcase six to seven themed hot dogs, such as the “Freighter,” “Captain,” “First Mate,” and “The Vermilion.” Mini corn dogs, aptly named “Little Dinghy,” and a pulled pork sandwich will also be available. Guests will have access to a variety of mustards and the option to build their own hot dog.

Sides will include “Starboard Sides” offerings like potato salad, coleslaw, and fries. To complement their meal, customers can enjoy shaved ice, slushies for kids, and ice cream treats such as ice cream bars.

The board members—Robbie Brown, Pat Stein, Dan Pryor, Judy Doll, and Tara Leslie—expressed enthusiasm for the Levi family’s plans and their contribution to the local business community. Pat Stein moved to approve the application, with Judy Doll seconding the motion. The board voted unanimously in favor, allowing the Levi family to move forward with their improvements.

With approval secured, Vermilion residents can look forward to the grand opening of the Levi family’s hot dog stand. We will be searching for more details on that, stay tuned. The next Historic Design and Review Board meeting is scheduled for April 2, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Vermilion Municipal Complex.
