Committee Reports

Each council member presented their committee’s updates.

• Finance; Historic Design & Review; Planning Commission; Stormwater Advisory – Jeff Lucas, Ward 4: Councilman Lucas provided an overview of his committees, focusing on ongoing stormwater management projects and upcoming planning initiatives.
• Health & Safety – Drew Werley, Ward 3 (covering for Brian Holmes, Ward 5): Councilman Werley stepped in to report on health and safety matters, addressing public safety concerns and emergency service updates.
• Vermilion Tree Commission – Drew Werley, Ward 3: Werley also gave an update on the Tree Commission’s efforts to preserve and expand the city’s green spaces.
• Legislative; Parks & Recreation – Gary Howell, At Large: Councilman Howell discussed the progress of local parks projects and upcoming recreational activities.
• Streets, Buildings & Grounds; Port Authority – Steve Herron, President: President Herron gave a detailed update on infrastructure improvements, including road repairs and port authority developments.
• Main Street Vermilion – Patricia West, Ward 1: Councilwoman West focused on the ongoing work with Main Street Vermilion and plans to enhance the city’s downtown area.
• Utilities; Zoning Board of Appeals – Greg Drew, Ward 2: Councilman Drew, was running late and attended the first part of the meeting remotely, did not give a report as he arrived after the committee meeting.

Administration Reports

After the committee reports, the administration provided their updates:

• Mayor/Safety Director’s Report – Jim Forthofer: The Mayor updated the council on safety initiatives, including ongoing fire and police department efforts.
• Service Director’s Report – Tony Valerius: The Service Director gave an overview of current service operations and upcoming maintenance projects.
• Finance Director’s Report – Amy Hendricks: Hendricks provided the finance report, focusing on the city’s budget and upcoming financial planning.
• City Engineer’s Report – Chris Howard: Mr. Howard provided updates on various construction projects, including the VOL Lateral project, and discussed the Sunnyside Road Phase 3 project. He requested council to approve an ordinance for the contract, explaining that federal authorization is required before construction can begin.
• Law Director’s Report – Susan Anderson: A representative from Susan Anderson’s law firm attended in her place, as the Law Director was unable to attend the meeting.
