Vermilion residents frustrated with potholes, patchwork fixes, and deteriorating roads might finally see some relief—but only in select areas.
At the recent Vermilion City Council meeting, residents like Mark Williams voiced concerns about the poor condition of city streets, highlighting ongoing issues with potholes and road damage. Service Director Tony Valerius confirmed some upcoming relief: Pineview Drive is scheduled for repairs, roads in Vermilion-on-the-Lake (VOL) are set to receive new paving shortly, and the Sunnyside Road reconstruction (phase three) will begin June 9th and continue over the next few months.
However, these projects are only part of a broader issue. Many roadways remain severely deteriorated, including heavily traveled routes like South Street, which has seen increased traffic due to recent pattern changes. Numerous residential streets throughout the city also have poor ratings, with no clear timeline or adequate funding in place to address them.
While patching offers temporary fixes, many roads are beyond basic repair and require complete rebuilding. City leaders will now have to consider more practical solutions that target the problem in a broader scale, such as hiring a dedicated grant writer to secure additional funding from state and federal resources, or introducing a road levy, as suggested by resident Mr. Homer Taft in his correspondence to council Monday night.

Potential solutions will be explored in upcoming Vermilion City Council meetings, where residents can voice their concerns and advocate for action. Public involvement will be key in determining the outcomes on which the city’s streets gets repaired.
