A woman is dead and a man is in custody following a suspected murder-attempted suicide that occurred Thursday morning at a residence near the corner of Ferndale Avenue and Liberty Avenue in Vermilion.

Preliminary reports indicate that an out-of-state male suspect shot a female victim, believed to be known to him, shortly before 7 a.m., possibly while police officers were already on the scene. The suspect then allegedly attempted to take his own life but survived and is now being held at the Lorain County Jail.

Vermilion Police Department Sgt. Chandler briefly confirmed the ongoing investigation while crime scene investigators worked at the scene. No official report has yet been released, and further details, including names and the relationship between the individuals, have not been confirmed.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available from the Vermilion Police Department.
