VERMILION — For Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Katie Hayden, stepping into this role isn’t just about the game — it’s about helping shape a program and guiding young athletes on and off the field.
Hayden, who returned to the area a decade ago, said she was drawn to the position because she wanted to see the Lady Sailors’ program grow from the youth level up through high school.
“Since moving back to the area 10 years ago, we recognized the importance of expanding youth sports — not just for the seasons, but to help encourage lifelong skills on and off the pitch,” Hayden said. “When the opportunity arose to expand it from the youth to the high school level in Vermilion, we felt like it was the right move for myself, my family, and the community.”
Building More Than Players
Hayden said what excites her most is the opportunity to make an impact in her athletes’ lives beyond wins and losses.
“It is not about just the game of soccer,” she said. “It is about the life skills, habits, and mindsets that will carry them on throughout the season and the rest of their lives.”
Hayden, along with her assistant coaches, is committed to fostering an environment where athletes develop confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.
Focus on Development During a Rebuilding Year
With this season considered a rebuilding year, Hayden said the main focus is helping players grow as individuals and as teammates.
“Our main focus for the year is to help develop these players into positive role models and members of society,” Hayden explained. “We are focusing on teaching each athlete how important they are — to themselves, as a teammate, and as a person in the community.”
With players of varying ages, skill levels, and previous coaching experiences, Hayden said the team has been working hard to mesh together, learn new concepts, and build chemistry.
Coaching with Heart
Hayden described her coaching style as servant-based and team-focused, emphasizing the social and emotional aspects of the game as much as the physical ones.
“All of us coaches are hoping to teach these girls the skills to be successful on and off the field,” she said. “I hope to bring a perspective on the game and life that will help carry these athletes throughout this season and their years beyond.”
A Message to Parents and the Community
Hayden praised her players’ dedication and said the team’s growth goes beyond the scoreboard.
“Each one of these athletes is truly amazing inside and out,” Hayden said. “Each one brings a different aspect, perception, attitude, and ability that helps create a wonderful team no matter the results. If we’ve shown growth and progress, then they’ve succeeded.”
Lessons Beyond the Season
Above all, Hayden hopes her athletes walk away from this season with confidence in themselves — both on and off the field.
“I hope they know they are wonderful on the field and off the field, inside and out,” she said. “Even when they’re doubting themselves, I hope they never forget their value.”
Hayden called it a privilege to coach the Lady Sailors and said she looks forward to watching their continued growth throughout the season.
