
Vermilion Township authorities responded to a fatal collision between a van and a Norfolk Southern train on Coen Road at the Northern railroad crossing late Thursday morning.

According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office dispatch log, the crash occurred at approximately 11:59 a.m. Emergency responders, including the Vermilion Township Fire Department and LifeCare EMS, were dispatched to the scene. Metro LifeFlight was launched but later canceled.

Deputies confirmed the driver was deceased at the scene. Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth contacted the coroner at 12:56 p.m., and Riddle Funeral Home was notified shortly after. Authorities completed witness statements and documented the scene.
The train, identified as Norfolk Southern #22X27, was temporarily held as officials investigated. No further details have been released regarding the cause of the crash or the identity of the victim.

The incident remains under investigation.
