A normally routine spring afternoon turned hectic on Monday, April 28, 2025, as multiple unrelated emergencies unfolded within a few hours at Vermilion Local Schools sports complex on Sailorway Dr.
At 4:26 p.m., first responders were called to the Vermilion Field House after a juvenile was struck in the head by a shotput. The child was semi-conscious when emergency crews arrived and was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Less than an hour later, at 5:25 p.m., a second medical emergency was reported at the Field House involving a 67-year-old man suffering a possible stroke. A second ambulance was dispatched to the scene.
While the medical calls were being handled, officers also responded to two separate reports of a dog allegedly left inside a black GMC Denali parked at the complex. In both instances, officers were unable to locate a dog inside the vehicle. The second complaint came in as the vehicle was leaving the area.
Later, at 7:26 p.m., officers took a harassment report from a woman on Sailorway Drive who alleged ongoing harassment by an ice cream truck driver, an issue she said had continued since last year. A protection order was advised, and extra patrols were ordered around the area.
Although none of the incidents were directly connected, the series of calls created an unusually active scene around Vermilion’s major sports fields, where multiple events were underway.
We would like to thank Vermilion’s police officers, dispatchers, and first responders for their quick response, professionalism, and dedication under pressure. Their calm handling of a very busy afternoon helped keep the community safe.
