The Vermilion Fire Department responded rapidly to a reported structure fire Saturday afternoon at 1233 State Street in the City of Vermilion.

According to Fire Chief Bill Brown, the first engine arrived on scene within three minutes of the initial dispatch. Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke coming from both the north and south peaks, as well as the eaves of the home. Flames were visible from the rear of the structure.

Lt. Doug O’Donnell, who served as the incident commander, met with the occupant outside. The resident confirmed that all individuals and her dog were safely out of the home.

Crews from Engine 94 quickly deployed an attack line to the back of the house, successfully knocking down much of the exterior fire before advancing inside to fully extinguish the blaze. Firefighters contained the flames to the utility room, though heavy smoke damage was reported throughout the structure. The fire was officially brought under control at 2:36 p.m.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has assumed control of the investigation. At this time, the cause of the fire is officially listed as “under investigation.”

Automatic mutual aid was provided by Vermilion Township, Amherst Fire Department, and Florence Township Fire Department to assist in the response.

No injuries were reported to the occupant, her dog, or responding firefighters.
