The Friends of Ritter Public Library continue to make a significant impact on Vermilion’s community, providing critical support to enhance the library’s offerings and cultural activities. As we reflect on their incredible achievements in 2024, it’s clear their dedication to literacy, education, and community engagement has left an indelible mark. With ambitious plans for 2025, the Friends aim to build on their successes and invite everyone in Vermilion to join their mission.

Who Are the Friends of Ritter Public Library?
The Friends of Ritter Public Library is a dedicated nonprofit organization comprised of volunteers who are passionate about promoting literacy, education, and cultural engagement in Vermilion. Their mission is to enhance public appreciation and use of the library while supporting its programs and services through fundraising, advocacy, and community involvement.

The group plays a vital role in bridging the gap between the library’s budget and its growing needs. From organizing popular events like the Annual Book Sale and Chocolate Fest to funding programs such as the Summer Reading Program and maintaining Little Free Libraries, the Friends ensure that Ritter Public Library remains a vibrant hub of learning and culture. By collaborating with local schools, organizations, and community members, they help expand the library’s reach and impact throughout Vermilion.

Looking Back at 2024
The Friends of Ritter Public Library had a remarkable year filled with events and contributions that brought the community together. Here’s a snapshot of their 2024 achievements:

  • Community Events: From the Annual Book Sale and Chocolate Fest to free concerts, a Patio Party, a Wreath Auction, and a Beach Glass Presentation, the Friends hosted a variety of events to raise funds and foster community spirit.
  • Program Support: They provided funding and resources for the Summer Reading Program for children and adults, established the Vermilion Poetry Society, and maintained three Little Free Libraries.
  • Educational Contributions: The Friends donated books to Vermilion Public School’s Literacy Program and supported key events such as Chalk It Up and the Ice Affair.
  • Financial Impact: Over the past two years, the Friends donated approximately $27,000 in goods and services to the library, with a $10,000 pledge for 2025.

Exciting Events in 2025
The Friends are kicking off 2025 with a packed calendar of exciting events.

  • Chocolate Fest – February 1: This annual favorite coincides with the Ice-A-Fair in downtown Vermilion. Homemade chocolates will be available at Ritter Public Library from 9:30 a.m. to noon (or until sold out), with a cozy Hospitality Lounge offering coffee, tea, and water. They are still looking for bakers! If you’d like to showcase your delicious treats while supporting the library, contact Sue Forthofer or email the Friends at friendsofritterpubliclibrary@gmail.com as soon as possible.
  • Celtic Performance – March 15: Harpist Virginia Dickson and her husband, Duane, will deliver a captivating Celtic performance in authentic costumes at 2:00 p.m. Free refreshments will be provided.
  • Apollo’s Fire Concert – April 30: This renowned baroque orchestra is bringing a free special performance to Vermilion. Stay tuned for more details in the spring.

Monthly Meetings and Community Involvement
