City of Vermilion Parks and Recreation Meeting

The Vermilion Parks and Recreation Board convened on March 18, 2025, at the Vermilion Municipal Court Complex to discuss ongoing projects, funding approvals, and upcoming community events. The meeting, led by Chair Tina Swinehart, covered a range of topics, including park improvements, upcoming community events, and a detailed discussion on future recreation enhancements.

Community Events Approved

The board approved two event permits:

  • Memorial Day Program – Beth Eberhard requested Victory Park’s use on May 26, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. While a parade is uncertain, the Memorial Day program will proceed. Discussion arose about the Vermilion Rotary potentially taking over the event, but no confirmation was made.
  • Easter Sunrise Service – Heidi Strickler of Harbor Town Community Church received approval to hold an Easter service at Main Street Beach on April 20, 2025, from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m.

Park and Recreation Project Updates

  • West Breeze Park Pickleball Courts – Parks Operations Director Marc Weisenberger updated the board on the site improvement project, noting drainage work is nearly complete, with fence post installation set to begin soon. He requested an additional $35,000 from Fund 204 to prepare the site for blacktop, which the board approved unanimously.
  • Main Street Beach Observation Deck – The observation deck project, in collaboration with Vermilion in Bloom, is scheduled to begin construction on April 7, with completion expected before the summer season. The project also includes the installation of foot-washing stations.
  • Showse Park Revitalization – The board reviewed finalized equipment designs for the playground, which includes structures for ages 2-5 and 5-12, along with a double-decker spinner designed for accessibility. An anonymous donor is funding the spinner, and all equipment selections prioritize functionality and modern play elements.

Public Art Installation at Showse Park

The board approved a conceptual design for a new interactive public art piece—a large, nautical-themed sculpture to be installed at Showse Park. Public Art Vermilion will fund and maintain the piece, which is designed to reflect the city’s maritime heritage.

Community Pool Enhancements

Pool Committee Chair Karen Viterna presented updates on the Vermilion Community Pool, including an expanded schedule and a new “members-only” swim time. The board approved a minor membership fee increase of $5 to cover added operational costs, particularly with the addition of a splash pad. The pool will also offer private party rentals and water aerobics classes.

Environmental Concerns Over Park Lighting

Resident Helen Taft raised concerns about artificial lighting at Main Street Beach impacting bird and insect migration. The board acknowledged the issue and discussed options for downward-facing solar lights to reduce light pollution while maintaining nighttime visibility.

Funding Approvals and Next Steps

The board approved multiple funding requests under Old Business, including:

  • $35,000 for West Breeze Park improvements
  • $13,500 for a new swing set at Showse Park
  • $36,500 for climbing equipment and a spinner at Showse Park
  • $138,000 for additional playground structures at Showse Park

The next Parks and Recreation Board meeting is scheduled for April 15, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Vermilion Municipal Court Complex.
