Vermilion Sailors Athletics is proud to spotlight two standout athletes who have demonstrated exceptional talent and leadership in their respective sports this week. Senior swimmer William Matheson and senior bowler Michael Leonardi have both excelled recently, making significant contributions to their teams’ successes and earning recognition as the Athletes of the Week.

William Matheson: A Strong Force in the Pool

William Matheson, a senior at Vermilion High School, has proven to be a key member of the Sailors Swim Team in his second season. Matheson’s prowess in the pool was on full display during the SBC Conference meet on Saturday, January 11th, hosted by Perkins High School.

In the competition, Matheson secured impressive first-place finishes in both the 50-yard Freestyle and the 100-yard Freestyle. He completed the 50-yard Freestyle with a time of 23.49 and the 100-yard Freestyle in 53.52, earning a total of 20 points for the Sailors. These two victories were vital for the team’s overall performance and highlighted Matheson’s competitive spirit and skill in sprint swimming.

But his contributions didn’t stop there. Matheson also helped the Sailors in relay events, contributing to a second-place finish in the Boys 200-yard Medley Relay and another first-place victory in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay. His leadership and dedication helped propel the Sailors Swim Team to an overall second-place finish in the Lake Division.

Matheson’s stellar performances at the SBC Conference meet reflect the hard work and determination that he has put into his swimming career. As the season progresses, Matheson will continue to be a crucial asset to the team, and his efforts exemplify the commitment to excellence that the Sailors program strives for.

Michael Leonardi: Leading the Charge in Bowling

Michael Leonardi, a senior on the Vermilion Sailors Bowling Team, has shown impressive skill and leadership on the lanes, recently guiding the team to their first victory of the season. Leonardi’s remarkable performance included a series of 395, with scores of 137 and 258 in his games. His high score of 258 in particular was a standout, showcasing his consistency and ability to rise to the occasion under pressure.

Leonardi’s impressive series helped lead the Sailors to their victory, and his strong individual performance played a critical role in the team’s success. As a senior, Leonardi’s experience and leadership have been essential in motivating his teammates and driving the team’s progress.

Off the lanes, Leonardi is a student at EHOVE, and his parents are Michael and Kathy Leonardi. His academic and athletic achievements are a testament to his hard work and dedication, both in school and on the bowling team.

Acknowledging Excellence

Both William Matheson and Michael Leonardi were selected by Vermilion Local School District Athletic Director Andrew Stillman for their outstanding performances and contributions to their teams. Their hard work, sportsmanship, and determination make them excellent representatives of the Vermilion Sailors Athletics program.

We would like to take a moment to thank both athletes for their incredible efforts and dedication to their sports. Their achievements this season are commendable, and we look forward to seeing what they accomplish in the coming weeks. Congratulations, William and Michael, on being named Athletes of the Week!

Go Sailors!
