Cyclists looking for a scenic and immersive ride through Lorain County, Ohio, will find the Back Roads and Beaches Bike and Multi-Sport Route a premier experience. This 100+ mile route showcases rolling countryside, historic landmarks, and the stunning Lake Erie shoreline while connecting charming towns along the way.

Route Overview

📍 Total Distance: Approximately 100 miles
🏙️ Key Towns Reached:

  • Oberlin – A vibrant college town with rich abolitionist history
  • Wellington – Known for its historic architecture and annual Lorain County Fair
  • Vermilion – A picturesque lakeside town with marinas, beaches, and small-town charm

This route is designed for cyclists of all levels, offering a mix of flat open stretches, gently rolling hills, and well-marked paths.

Vermilion Segment: A Scenic Highlight 🌊

As the route loops through Vermilion, riders will enjoy a blend of waterfront views, small-town hospitality, and tree-lined roads. Key sections include:

  • Vermilion Road – A peaceful stretch leading into the city
  • Liberty Avenue – The main downtown corridor, featuring local shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks
  • West River Road – A scenic ride along the Vermilion River, with access to parks and nature spots

This portion of the trail is ideal for sightseeing, grabbing a bite to eat, or taking a break at one of Vermilion’s lakefront parks.

Alternate Route for a Shorter Ride

🚴 Not up for the full 100-mile loop? No problem!

If you’d like a shorter route, you can loop through Oberlin and back to Vermilion instead of heading south on Quarry Road. This provides a solid few hours of riding while still taking in the best scenic and historic highlights of the trail.

For those looking for a longer challenge, the full 100-mile loop offers an all-day adventure with incredible variety and great stops along the way.
