VERMILION, Ohio — Grace United Methodist Church has launched its newly formed Diversity Committee, beginning a series of public programs focused on education, dialogue, and community connection.
The committee held its first event on October 12, recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month. The second presentation featured guest speaker Justin Nacarato, who shared his personal experiences growing up as a gay child and athlete and discussed how acceptance, faith, and courage shaped his life journey.
According to information provided by the church, the Diversity Committee was created to develop opportunities for learning and conversation within the community. The committee’s stated goal is to promote understanding through educational events and shared dialogue.
Pastor Preston Watkins said the church believes all people are beloved children of God and that the Diversity Committee supports the congregation’s commitment to inclusion, open dialogue, and community engagement.
The church has announced several upcoming programs planned for 2025, including events recognizing Black History Month, discussions addressing bias and refugee issues, a ministry panel focused on disability, and a tour of Flat Rock Homes, which provides residential services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The committee has also announced plans for Vermilion’s first Pride event, scheduled for June 6. The event is described as “Pride 2026: Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors” and is planned as a day of speakers, vendors, music, entertainment, and food on the church’s grounds. The event is expected to be co-sponsored by Shores & Islands Ohio.
Dr. Jim Chapple, chair of the Diversity Committee, said the programs are intended to create spaces for learning, listening, and community engagement.
All events are open to the public and will take place at Grace United Methodist Church, located at 13406 W. Lake Road in Vermilion. Additional information is available by contacting Dr. Jim Chapple at 440-225-1547 or chappljw@aol.com.
