Councilman Jeff Lucas attended to discuss potential fundraising collaborations between the Port Authority and the Showse Park Revitalization Project. He outlined plans for a July 4th celebration featuring a veterans’ tribute, a flagpole dedication, and park improvements, including a new playground and exercise equipment.

The board acknowledged the difficulty of sustaining past fundraising methods, such as the golf cart raffle, and expressed interest in exploring new event-based opportunities to support waterfront initiatives.
Financial Overview
Arron Bias reported on the Port Authority’s financial status:
- The Special Revenue Fund began 2025 with a balance of $57,556.66, with a year-to-date net revenue of $2,972.67 and expenses totaling $2,706.52, leaving an unexpended balance of $57,822.81.
- The Capital Fund stood at $49,573.50, bolstered by a $5,000 grant.
- Revenue from dock leases included $9,835 paid toward 2025 agreements, with a remaining balance of $7,955. Bias noted that all leases were fully booked, with no current openings.
McGarvey’s Landing Improvements
The board approved multiple improvement projects at McGarvey’s Landing, including:
- Planter reconstruction by Stein Contracting, not exceeding $9,445.
- Electrical work by Buckeye Electrical Solutions for $5,900.
- Tree removal and replacement, with Vermilion in Bloom donating four new trees.
- Installation of a new kiosk, funded by a donation from Peter Corogin.
Concerns were raised about contractor oversight after previous damage to the site. Bias committed to better supervision of ongoing projects.
Wi-Fi and Infrastructure Concerns
The board discussed the exclusion of McGarvey’s Landing and South Street from the city’s fiber upgrade plan. Arron Bias emphasized that Wi-Fi is essential for marina operations and noted that the Port Authority already contributes to citywide fiber access. The board agreed to advocate for the inclusion of these locations in the upgrade to ensure reliable connectivity for boaters and staff.
South Street and Exchange Street Dock Maintenance
Bias provided updates on necessary repairs, including:
- Welding work on South Street docks.
- Full dock replacement at Exchange Street due to wood rot.
- The kayak launch is scheduled for installation in April.
Future Events and Initiatives
The board discussed the upcoming Poker Run and other fundraising ideas, with an emphasis on collaborating with the Parks Department for joint events. Bias also reported ongoing efforts to secure grants, including funding opportunities through Lake Erie Shores and Islands, to further support port improvements.
Looking Ahead
With numerous projects underway, the Port Authority remains focused on strengthening Vermilion’s waterfront assets. The next meeting is scheduled for April 10, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at the Vermilion Municipal Court Complex.
