A driver was airlifted to a Cleveland hospital early Monday morning after crashing into a home on Liberty Avenue in Vermilion.
According to Sgt. Holmes of the Vermilion Police Department, the incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. when a vehicle traveling westbound on Liberty struck multiple objects before crashing into a residence near McDonald’s.
Officer Cobb, who was traveling eastbound on Liberty at the time, observed the speeding vehicle but had not activated her lights or initiated a pursuit when the crash occurred. The car reportedly glanced off a traffic light barrier near KeyBank, then continued off the road, striking a utility pole, a bush, and a large pine tree before hitting a sizable oak. The impact spun the vehicle into the front of a nearby house.
The homeowner was asleep inside at the time and was not injured. The house sustained heavy damage to the front wall, bay window, and façade. Vermilion Police, Vermilion Fire, LifeCare Ambulance, Ohio Edison, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol all responded to the scene.
LifeCare personnel determined the driver needed to be flown to a trauma center. Life Flight landed in the Sharpnack Chevrolet parking lot: the same location used earlier in the week for another emergency transport. The driver was flown to a Cleveland hospital, believed to be MetroHealth Medical Center.
Police said alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor. The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed as of Monday morning. One lane of Liberty Avenue was temporarily closed while Ohio Edison replaced a damaged utility pole.
