The Historic Design & Review Board met on November 5, 2025, and approved several residential updates along with an accessibility improvement for the Vermilion History Museum. The meeting was held at the Vermilion Municipal Court Complex and chaired by Robbie Brown. All five board members were present.

The Board approved the minutes from its October meeting with one abstention.

Roofing Repair Approved on Huron Street

The Board approved an emergency roofing repair on Huron Street after the homeowner reported that parts of the roof had deteriorated down to bare wood. Members reviewed the scope of work and allowed the project to move forward.

South Street Application Not Heard

The applicant for a planned roofing and gutter project on South Street was not present. Items without the applicant are typically carried to the next meeting unless prior arrangements are made.

Exterior Improvements Cleared on Perry Street

A set of exterior updates for a home on Perry Street was approved. Planned work includes vinyl siding on the gable ends, white soffit painting, removal of a tree, and installation of a white privacy fence along the rear property line. The homeowner presented photos during the meeting to clarify materials and design.

Vermilion History Museum to Replace Entrance Steps

The Vermilion History Museum received approval for a project to replace its steep single step with two wider, lower-rise steps and a centered handrail between the double doors. The handrail will be removable to allow larger items to pass through the entrance.

Board members and Mayor Jim Forthofer supported the concept, noting that step height will need final verification by the Building Department to meet code. Museum representatives said the improvement should make the entrance safer for visitors and volunteers.

Next Meeting

The Historic Design & Review Board will meet again on December 3 at 6 p.m. at the Vermilion Municipal Court Complex.
