A neighborhood dispute on Jackson Street escalated into violence Tuesday night, leading to one man’s arrest and another’s hospitalization.
Police were called to the area around 9:41 p.m. on July 22 after a 53-year-old Jackson Street resident reported being assaulted by his neighbor, Rickey L. Haynes, 67, who lives next door at 1146 Jackson.
According to police, the conflict began when the victim was taking his trash to the curb. Haynes allegedly confronted him over prior name-calling involving Haynes’ wife. The victim said Haynes pushed a trash can at him, followed him onto his property, and assaulted him near his front porch.
Officers observed the victim with visible injuries, including a bloody nose, and later collected video footage from his phone showing part of the altercation. One video reportedly showed Haynes pushing the trash can and following the victim. A second video captured the moments just before the two began grappling.
Haynes initially told officers he was provoked but said he couldn’t remember the full exchange. He had blood on his fingers but no visible injuries. He later declined to let officers view security footage from his property that may have captured the incident.
Haynes’ wife confirmed there was a physical altercation but said she did not want to be involved. Officers noted a long-standing history of conflict between the neighbors.
Haynes was arrested without incident and charged with assault and aggravated trespass, both first-degree misdemeanors. He was taken to the Erie County Jail with no bond set at the time of booking.
The victim was transported by LifeCare Ambulance to Mercy Hospital for evaluation. Police collected evidence at the scene and recorded the encounter on body-worn cameras.
