HURON TOWNSHIP — The Erie County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation after badly decomposed human remains were discovered by a recreational kayaker this morning in a marsh along the Huron River.
The discovery was made at approximately 10 a.m. on May 16 in a marshy area on the west side of the river, roughly 1,000 feet south of the State Route 2 bridge.
Personnel from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner Dr. Brian Baxter responded to the scene. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) also dispatched crime scene agents to assist with the collection of forensic evidence.
The Huron Fire Department was called in and successfully recovered the body from the remote area along the riverbank.
Dr. Baxter has ordered an autopsy, which will be performed by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office. As of now, the individual has not been identified, and no details regarding the cause of death have been released.
The investigation is active and ongoing, authorities said in a statement.
