Elyria, Ohio – The Lorain County Board of Commissioners convened on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, for a meeting that saw the recognition of local athletic excellence, the approval of significant community development initiatives, and discussions surrounding an expedited annexation.
The meeting began with a series of proclamations honoring State Track & Field Champions from Lorain County high schools. Rania Brown of Avon High School was celebrated as a two-time Division 1 State Discus Champion , while Nathan Bright of North Ridgeville High School was recognized as the Division 1 State High Jump Champion. Ariannh Floyd from Firelands High School was also honored as the Division 2 300m hurdles Champion. The Oberlin High School Girls Track & Field team received commendation for their outstanding 2025 season, which included individual successes from Alyssa Webb (100m Dash) , Olivia Hudson (400m Dash) , and Cayman Noble (Long Jump) , as well as the 4×100 and 4×200 State Champion Team composed of Jasmine McDearmon, Melody Cyrus, Aubrey Abeyta, and Olivia Hudson.
In their regular course of business, the Commissioners addressed several resolutions, including Investments, Appropriations, Transfers, Requisitions, and Bills. While these resolutions were approved, no specific noteworthy details or individual line items were highlighted during the meeting’s discussion for these sections. They represent routine financial and administrative approvals for the county.
A significant discussion revolved around the decision on an expedited annexation of approximately 9.7093 acres to the City of Elyria, Ohio, petitioned by Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. Despite objections raised regarding adherence to deadlines and potential road maintenance issues due to the division of roads, the annexation was approved.
Further into the meeting, the Commissioners approved the CHIP PY25 Application submission to the Ohio Development Services Agency for $1,600,000. This funding is earmarked for housing improvements for low- and moderate-income homeowners in eligible jurisdictions across Lorain County, including the cities of Oberlin, Sheffield Lake, North Ridgeville, and Amherst. The total PY25 budget for this initiative stands at $1,900,199.
In matters concerning county infrastructure, the Commissioners received and journalized the County Engineer’s annual report on the condition of ditches for 2025, authorizing the Lorain County Auditor to assess for maintenance. A contract was awarded to Melway Paving Co. Inc. in the amount of $862,752.10 for the 2025 Countywide Chip & Seal Program Project, with work slated for completion by September 15, 2025. Additionally, the County Engineer was authorized to execute a Consulting Services Agreement with TRC for $20,522.91 for an ecological survey related to the resurfacing of Pyle South Amherst Road, which is slated to receive federal highway funding.
The Sheriff’s report indicated that 34,246 meals were served to prisoners in May at a cost ranging from $1.40 to $3.15 per meal. Various highway use permits issued by the County Engineer for gas service line work and a sanitary sewer extension were also noted.
The meeting concluded with a reminder that county offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in observance of Juneteenth.
