A string of traffic accidents across the Vermilion area Sunday afternoon sent emergency crews scrambling and caused delays along several key routes.
The first major incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. near Baumhart Road and State Route 2. According to scanner traffic and dispatch logs, a vehicle traveling eastbound reportedly crossed the median and flipped onto its side in the westbound lanes. This two-vehicle crash resulted in at least one injury, with a patient transported to the hospital. Moments later, another crash was reported nearby, involving a rollover and a vehicle in the ditch. Amherst authorities shut down SR-2 westbound at Oak Point as Lifecare EMS responded to transport trauma patients to Mercy ER.
Just after 5:25 p.m., a third crash was reported at SR-2 and Sunnyside Road. This incident was classified as non-injury, but it added to the already mounting traffic concerns in the area.
Later, around 7:07 p.m., a motorcycle accident occurred near the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Highbridge Road, in front of the Harbortown Animal Clinic. Witnesses reported that the rider appeared to be shaken but attempted to continue toward the clinic after going down. The extent of injuries is unknown at this time.
Separately, another crash was reported earlier at SR-113 and Gore Orphanage Road. Initial details have not yet been confirmed. We have reached out the OSHP for the complete details on this accident and are awaiting reply.
Residents commenting on social media noted the unusually high number of accidents within just a few hours. Some mentioned erratic driving, excessive speed, and possible heat-related factors. One commenter described a hit-skip crash in the same area, where the fleeing driver was followed by the victim until the suspect vehicle ended up in a ditch. It’s unknown at this time if any of the crashes may of been related.
Authorities have not yet released official statements on the individual crashes. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and remain patient as emergency personnel respond.
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
