A serious traffic crash closed the eastbound lanes of State Route 2 between Barnes Road and Joppa Road Wednesday afternoon, prompting a large emergency response and backing up traffic for miles in Vermilion.
According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, the closure was issued around noon and remains in effect as of this report. The department noted that the crash occurred on SR2 eastbound in the area between Barnes and Joppa roads, with an advisory issued to motorists to avoid the area until further notice.

Photos from the scene show a heavily damaged commercial-style vehicle overturned on the roadside, with multiple fire and rescue crews responding. Firefighters were seen spraying down the roadway, and multiple emergency vehicles—including fire trucks, EMS units, and law enforcement—were stationed on site.
The crash caused a significant traffic backup stretching down Route 2, with semi-trucks and passenger vehicles brought to a standstill.
No information has been released yet regarding the number of vehicles involved or whether there were any injuries. As of now, authorities have not announced a timeline for reopening the roadway.

This is a developing story. Lorain Daily will provide updates as more details are made available by law enforcement and emergency services.
