During the October 21 Vermilion Parks and Recreation Board meeting, a resident raised concerns about growing noise and parking problems at West Breeze Park as its pickleball courts draw more players.
Mike McClure, who lives on State Street, told board members that activity at the park has started as early as 6:30 a.m., with players using blowers to clear the courts before sunrise. He also reported issues with vehicles parking overnight or throughout the weekend, along with damage to his yard and ongoing drainage problems linked to nearby maintenance work.
McClure said fallen branches, untrimmed trees, and a lack of fencing separating his property from the park have added to his frustrations. He asked city officials to consider clearer rules and physical boundaries to protect neighboring homes.
Parks Operations Director Marc Weisenberger and Service Director Tony Valerius said they would review the maintenance concerns and tree conditions. Mayor Jim Forthofer reminded the board that a city ordinance prohibits 24-hour parking and said vehicles left overnight can be towed once signage is posted.
Board members discussed possible solutions, including additional signs or automatic gates, to help manage after-hours park use. They also noted that while pickleball and other recreation have increased community participation, the city must balance accessibility with neighborhood peace.
The board plans to continue reviewing the issue as Vermilion’s park system experiences growing use.
