A long-distance runner attempting to cross all 50 states on foot passed through Vermilion this week, drawing a brief police escort and a steady stream of well-wishers along Liberty Avenue.
Noah Coughlan is currently on what he describes as his final transcontinental project, “Run For America,” a 5,500-mile journey across 20 states over roughly 260 days. His stated goal is to finish in Hawaii on July 4, 2026, aligning the run with the nation’s 250th birthday.
Who He Is
Coughlan is an ultrarunner and filmmaker from California who has completed multiple long-distance runs over the past decade, including several cross-country efforts and an international run in Ireland. According to information shared through his project, he has logged more than 14,000 miles on foot through these runs.
What He’s Doing
For this journey, Coughlan has framed the run as a tribute to the American people. He is carrying an American flag and stopping in communities along the way to meet residents, veterans and first responders, inviting them to share what the country and the flag mean to them. He is also documenting the trip as it unfolds.
The Vermilion Stop
In Vermilion, several Vermilion Police Department officers assisted with an escort as Coughlan moved through town. Officers had already begun escorting him from the Baumhart Road area before continuing into the city.
Coughlan stopped along Liberty Avenue and spent several minutes speaking with officers and residents as people gathered to meet him. One man told Coughlan he had traveled to Vermilion on behalf of his father, a retired Marine who was unable to attend. Coughlan took additional time to record a personal video message for him.
“Thanks for your service and the United States Marine Corps,” Coughlan said in the message. “It’s a pretty big deal that you were willing to serve, and your sacrifice, so guys like me can run across the United States and live in a free country.”
As more people arrived, Coughlan continued to pause for photos and brief conversations. By the time he prepared to move on, he had stopped multiple times, including making time for a woman and her son who were eager to meet him.
The Route Ahead
Coughlan said he expected to depart the following morning as he continued west. His planned route includes completing the continental United States by reaching the Pacific Northwest, followed by additional mileage in Alaska before finishing the run in Hawaii.
More information about the project, including route updates, is available through the Run For America website and Coughlan’s social media pages.
