Giant Eagle, a prominent regional supermarket chain, has announced its decision to sell all of its GetGo convenience stores by 2025. This move marks a significant shift in the company’s business strategy as it aims to refocus on its core supermarket and pharmacy operations.
The company has entered into an agreement with Alimentation Couche-Tard, a Canadian multinational that operates convenience stores globally under various banners, including Circle K. The sale is intended to allow Giant Eagle to allocate more resources toward enhancing and expanding its grocery and pharmacy segments, strengthening its position in these markets.
Despite the sale, Giant Eagle and Couche-Tard plan to maintain and potentially expand the myPerks loyalty program across both Giant Eagle and GetGo locations. This partnership could unlock additional discounts and value for customers of both brands.
Couche-Tard is expected to retain the current GetGo employees, ensuring continuity in service and operations as the transition takes place. The sale is anticipated to close by 2025, concluding Giant Eagle’s chapter in the convenience store market and reinforcing its commitment to its original business model.
This decision reflects a broader trend within the retail industry, where companies are increasingly narrowing their focus to core competencies to stay competitive and meet evolving consumer demands.
