A 48-year-old woman from Austin, Texas, was arrested Saturday night in Vermilion after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop and briefly resisting officers near the Vermilion Boat Club on Liberty Avenue.
According to police, an officer initiated the stop around 9:59 p.m. on July 26 after clocking a Mazda sedan traveling 53 mph in a 40 mph zone. The driver also reportedly ran a red light at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Vermilion Road.
When the officer made contact, the woman did not present a driver’s license and allegedly rolled up the windows before pulling away. She stopped again roughly two-tenths of a mile later, near the Boat Club, where officers conducted the arrest.
Police said she initially refused to leave her purse in the vehicle and did not comply with commands to exit. Officers used control techniques to place her into custody. No injuries were reported. The incident was recorded on body camera, and a use of force report was filed in accordance with department policy.
The woman was cited for speeding, failure to obey a traffic control device, and operating a vehicle without a license. She also received a criminal summons for failure to comply with a police officer’s order, a first-degree misdemeanor under Ohio law. Her vehicle, which bore Texas plates, was towed from the scene.
She was processed at the Vermilion Police Department and later transported to the Erie County Jail, where she remains held under a no-bond order. Jail records show an arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday in Vermilion Municipal Court.
