VERMILION TWP – Construction traffic related to ongoing development activity drew attention during the January 7 Vermilion Township Trustees meeting after officials reported that several trucks had been using roads not designated for construction haul routes.
According to the discussion, some construction trucks traveling toward the Waterwood project area were observed on Kneisel Road and Coen Road rather than following the approved haul route, which requires construction traffic to travel through the City of Vermilion before accessing the site. Township officials said the trucks appeared to be carrying heavy or oversized loads, raising concerns about potential wear on township roads not designed for sustained construction traffic.
Former township administrator Joe Baxter told trustees he contacted the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol after receiving complaints and observing the truck activity himself. Sheriff’s deputies later stopped three trucks and issued three citations. Following the enforcement action, the contractors involved redirected their vehicles back to the required route.
Trustees emphasized that repeated heavy construction traffic on non-designated roads can lead to premature wear or potential damage, and said they intend to continue monitoring the situation. At this time, it is not clear whether any additional review or action will occur beyond the citations already issued.
Residents were encouraged to report future concerns so the township can address them quickly.
