The rezoning process for a proposed 112-unit affordable housing development on Douglas Street took a surprise turn this week.
According to a source within the city, the development team at Wallick Communities has decided not to move forward at this time. The source said the developer realized that even if rezoning were approved, it would come too late to meet their funding application deadline.
Jimmy McCune, Vice President of Development for Wallick, confirmed the change in plans, saying, “We may revisit this opportunity in the future if it remains competitive.”
The Vermilion Municipal Planning Commission had previously advanced the rezoning request during its July 9 meeting, moving it to City Council for further consideration. That process may now be paused unless the developer returns with a renewed timeline. We will keep you posted with any future updates.
