The Vermilion community came together in a powerful show of unity and compassion following the sudden passing of seventh-grade Sailorway Middle School student Ellianna “Ellie” Smith.
During Friday night’s home football game, both the Vermilion Athletic Booster Club and the Vermilion Band Booster Club worked together to raise funds for Ellie’s family. Each group operated its own concession stand on opposite sides of Sailor Field, coordinating their efforts toward the same cause. In total, the evening brought in $692 to help with funeral expenses.
“It was a powerful reminder of what community truly means,” said Athletic Booster Club President Rachel Garcia. “Even in the midst of heartbreak, there was this overwhelming sense of unity. It wasn’t just about showing support for one family. It felt like everyone was standing together, saying, We’re here for you.”
Garcia said that while most Booster Club board members never had the chance to know Ellie personally, her story deeply touched them as parents. “From the stories we’ve heard, Ellie was such a light and a joyful soul,” she said. “We just wanted to do something to help. While it may not be much, collecting donations felt like a way we could show our support.”
The collaboration between the two booster clubs reflected the deep compassion of the Vermilion community. “The generosity, the kindness, the way people stepped up without hesitation was truly inspiring,” Garcia said. “Every dollar donated, every post shared, every quiet act of compassion made a difference. It showed that this is a community that cares deeply and rallies around those who are hurting.”
As of this week, the family’s GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $12,214 toward a $14,000 goal. Those wishing to contribute can visit:

Vermilion Schools Assistant Superintendent Wes Weaver previously expressed the district’s “deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences” to Ellie’s family, noting that crisis counselors remain available for students and staff.
Ellie is remembered as a “true ray of light,” known for her kindness, creativity, and love of art. Friends and classmates described her as someone whose smile could brighten any room and whose presence will be deeply missed.
