The Vermilion Parks and Recreation Board met on February 18, 2025, to discuss ongoing projects, upcoming community events, and park improvements across the city.

Main Street Beach Park Revitalization Project

Plans for Main Street Beach Park are progressing, with several upgrades on the horizon. A new observation deck is set to be constructed on the east end of the park in the near future. Additionally, the existing west-end observation deck will receive new sandstone-based benches. Two new foot-wash shower stations will also be installed.

The board is considering artwork for the pump station, though final details have not been determined. Shore Thing is working on new furniture for the area, and a dedication ceremony is planned for May’s Third Thursday event.

Showse Park Revitalization Project

Ward 4 Councilman Jeff Lucas provided an update on the Showse Park Revitalization Project, noting that Phase 1 is approximately 90% complete. Health and fitness equipment has been ordered, and “No Motorized Vehicles” signs will be installed soon.

During a recent subcommittee meeting, a presentation was given by an architect on a potential design honoring Tiki Beach, the historic name of the beach at Showse Park. Discussions are ongoing regarding the design and implementation of this tribute.

The board is also making progress on the Veterans Memorial flagpole, which will be placed on the northeast mound of the park. While the bidding process has not yet begun, planning is in its final stages.

Additionally, the Black River Astronomical Society is collaborating with the board to limit light pollution in the park. They are exploring solar-powered and dimmable lighting and plan to integrate educational programs and group-use permits for stargazing activities.

A group-use permit was also discussed for yoga sessions at Showse Park during the upcoming season.

To date, $97,000 has been raised to support the Showse Park Revitalization Project.

Upcoming Events and Community Use Permits

Several community events and group-use permits were reviewed, including:

  • Beach Yoga at Main Street Beach & Sherod Park (May 26 – Sept. 1, 2025)
  • Vermilion Chamber of Commerce Events:
