The Vermilion Police Department was recognized for its role in a multi-agency investigation that led to the federal conviction and sentencing of a Summit County man on child sexual abuse material charges, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio announced that the man was sentenced to nine years in federal prison after investigators uncovered more than 10,000 files containing child sexual abuse materials. Authorities said the offender received and distributed the material and attempted to destroy evidence as federal agents arrived to execute a search warrant.
The investigation was led by the FBI Akron Resident Agency and included assistance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Office of Criminal Investigation, the FBI Task Force, and the Vermilion Police Department, which provided support during the case, the Department of Justice said.
Federal officials emphasized that cooperation between agencies is critical in online exploitation cases, where shared intelligence and digital forensic tools help identify offenders and support successful prosecutions.
