The Vermilion Sailors have showcased remarkable talent and determination across various sports this week. Wrestling had some big tournaments at home we will be including from Winter Break. Here’s a detailed look at some of their performances:
Boys Varsity Basketball
- January 10: The Sailors faced a tough match-up against Huron, ultimately falling 58-40. Despite strong efforts, they were unable to overcome Huron’s dominant performance. Read more

- January 9: The Lady Sailors secured a commanding 50-23 victory against the St. Paul Flyers. Their offensive and defensive efforts were key in controlling the game. Read more
- January 11: In a closely contested game, the Sailors were edged out by the Willard Lady Flashes, 44-39. Despite the loss, the team displayed strong playmaking and resilience. Read more

- January 9: Facing a strong Perkins team, the JV Sailors faced a 57-22 loss. Despite the setback, the team showed glimpses of potential and continues to build experience. Read more

Girls Varsity Wrestling
The Vermilion Sailors’ Girls Varsity Wrestling team has continued to assert their dominance this season with impressive performances across several tournaments:
- December 22: The team hosted 36 visiting schools for the “Defense Soap” Pool Tournament, finishing in 3rd place. Junior Alyssa Woodward, Cora Frederick, Emily Stiner, Marissa Torres, and sophomore Faith Sergent led the charge, each going 4-1, while freshman Sophie Habermehl earned two wins. Read more
- December 27-28: At the prestigious Lady Longhorn Tournament at Lutheran West, the Sailors finished 9th out of 54 teams. Alyssa earned 6 wins, Cora and Emily each earned 5, while Marissa and Faith added 4 wins. Freshmen Sophie and Kathryn also contributed with Sophie earning 4 wins and Kathryn 3.
- January 5: In the “CIT” at Chippewa, the Sailors ended their holiday break with their best performance yet, claiming 1st place out of 40 teams. Alyssa dominated her weight class, earning a tournament championship at 125 lbs, defeating two ranked opponents. Emily, Marissa, and Faith made the finals in their weight classes, finishing as runners-up. Cora placed third, and freshmen Sophie and Kathryn each earned a win.
Boys Varsity Swimming
SBC Lake Division Meet
The Vermilion Boys Varsity Swim Team made waves at the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division Meet hosted by Perkins High School on January 11, securing an impressive 2nd place overall with 130 points. Sandusky High School claimed the top spot with 162 points, while Perkins High School rounded out the top three with 102 points.
Vermilion’s strong start came from both Medley Relay teams. The team of William Matheson, Cole Rini, Joseph Webb, and Joe Schaub earned 2nd place, while Oliver Hendrickson, Sean Rini, Jack Demyan, and Lucky Hovinetz finished 6th.
In individual events, the Sailors showed consistency:
- Cole Rini dominated with a 1st place finish in the 200 IM and set a new SBC record in the 100 Breaststroke.
- William Matheson secured two 1st place wins in the 50 and 100 Freestyle events.
- Joe Schaub contributed with a 6th place in the 100 Butterfly and 3rd in the 100 Backstroke.
- Additional points were scored by Joseph Webb, Jack Demyan, Oliver Hendrickson, and Sean Rini, showcasing depth in every event
Girls Varsity Swimming Port Clinton Tri-Meet
The Vermilion Girls Varsity Swim Team competed on January 4 at Port Clinton High School, finishing 3rd overall in a tri-meet against Tiffin Columbian and Port Clinton. The Lady Sailors earned a total of 24 points, while Columbian High School claimed 1st place with 75 points, and Port Clinton finished 2nd with 65 points.
The meet started strong with the Medley Relay team of Erin Ellis, Maddie Drost, Alexa Lyczkowski, and Sophie Habermehl, who secured a 3rd place finish out of five relay teams.
In individual events, the Lady Sailors showcased their skill:
- Erin Ellis took 5th in the 50 Freestyle and 3rd in the 100 Backstroke.
- Maddie Drost finished 6th in the 50 Freestyle and earned 3rd in the 100 Breaststroke.
- Sophie Habermehl placed 6th in the 100 Freestyle and 4th in the 100 Backstroke.
- Alexa Lyczkowski earned 4th in the 100 Butterfly and 5th in the 500 Freestyle.
- Keely Walts secured two 5th place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 Freestyle.

Boys Varsity Bowling
- January 10: The Sailors achieved a decisive victory over Norwalk, scoring 2087 to Norwalk’s 1718. Their consistent teamwork ensured the win and strengthened their standing. Read more

Girls 7th and 8th Grade Basketball
- January 9: The 7th-grade team clinched a narrow 33-31 victory over Willard. Their ability to stay composed in the final moments sealed the win. Read more
