On Thursday night, the Vermilion Sailors varsity wrestling team made history with a dominant 49-21 victory over the Firelands Falcons at home, securing their first-ever Stillman Cup win since the rivalry’s inception in 2016.
This annual matchup carries extra significance as Vermilion’s Athletic Director, Andy Stillman, and Firelands’ Athletic Director Ty Stillman, his brother, oversee their respective programs. The proximity of the two schools only adds to the intensity of the competition.

Despite an early, controversial loss, the Sailors rallied behind their senior leadership to take control of the meet. Their perseverance and determination ultimately led them to a decisive win, breaking an eight-year drought in this storied rivalry.
“It was a wonderful victory,” said Cliff German, who called the matches. “The seniors really stepped up tonight.”
This historic win not only brings the Stillman Cup to Vermilion for the first time but also cements the Sailors’ resilience and competitive spirit as they look ahead to the rest of the season.
