VERMILION — Voters in Erie and Lorain counties rejected the Vermilion Local School District’s proposed $47 million bond issue during Tuesday’s general election, according to unofficial results.

The proposal sought to fund major repairs and replacements for the district’s aging buildings, including roof reconstruction, HVAC upgrades, water and electrical improvements, and a new bus garage.

Unofficial totals show the bond issue failed with 60% of voters opposed and 40% in favor. Across both counties, 2,507 residents voted against the proposal, while 1,692 supported it, for a total of 4,199 ballots cast.

During an October town hall, Superintendent Wes Weaver and Treasurer Justin Klingshirn outlined the proposal and explained the district’s financial limitations. Weaver said the intent was to make sure residents had all the facts before the vote.

“This wasn’t a campaign event. It was about giving people clear information,” Weaver said.

Officials said the district will continue addressing safety and maintenance needs using existing funds, though projects will take longer without the bond.

“We’ll keep moving forward,” Klingshirn said. “But without the bond, progress will be slower.”
