According to a statement from Assistant Superintendent Wes Weaver, administrators and the school’s resource officer spent Thursday and Friday reviewing the report before determining “the preponderance of evidence suggested it was true.” Officials said the allegation was considered credible and disciplinary measures were taken.
“The well-being of our students and staff are of paramount importance, and we appreciate the trust you have placed in us,” Weaver wrote. “When this information came to light, our staff immediately reacted by following protocols put in place to ensure everyone’s safety. I appreciate their diligence and dedication this week.”
Officials did not release details on whether a gun was recovered, its type, or the student’s current status. No injuries were reported.
The district said it would not identify the student involved, citing safety and privacy protections for minors.
I also reached out to the Vermilion Police Department for additional details. Both the chief and captain were out of the office on Friday, and further information is not expected until at least Monday. The school resource officer continues to assist with the investigation.
