VERMILION, Ohio – Vermilion residents have a new way to stay active and connected with the opening of the Health and Fitness Trail at Showse Park. This addition is part of ongoing efforts to improve local recreational facilities and promote wellness throughout the community.
Trail Development and Features
The 0.8-mile paved pathway, suitable for walking, jogging, and other fitness activities, is a welcome upgrade to the park. Prepared by the Parks Department and constructed by ADT Construction, Inc., the trail has been developed in phases to ensure quality.
Jeff Lucas, Ward 4 Councilman and head of the Showse Park Revitalization Projects, recently provided updates on the second phase of the trail’s construction. A smoother walking surface is being added with a 2-inch layer of finer street milling. Lucas commended ADT Construction, led by Andrew and his team, for their dedication, particularly in managing challenges posed by the weather.
In addition to the trail, new health and fitness equipment is scheduled for installation in spring 2025. The equipment will further enhance the trail’s functionality, allowing residents to engage in a more dynamic fitness experience.
Community Engagement
The new trail has already sparked enthusiasm among residents. Social media updates have highlighted progress, drawing excitement and positive feedback from the community.
Fundraiser for Playground Enhancements
Efforts to revitalize Showse Park extend beyond the trail, with plans to upgrade the playground. A tropical-themed fundraiser, “Showse Park Palooza,” is scheduled for January 18, 2025, from 6 to 10 p.m. at German’s Villa in Vermilion.
Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at German’s Villa during business hours or by contacting Councilman Lucas at jlucas@cityofvermilionohio.gov. The event will feature:
- Door prizes and raffle baskets
- A 50/50 raffle
- A menu of BBQ pulled pork sliders, coleslaw, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, cookies, soda, and water
- A cash bar with event specials
- Music and dancing with DJ Scott, providing tropical vibes
Attendees are encouraged to wear tropical attire, and all proceeds will support the playground improvements. Sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are also available by contacting Councilman Lucas.
Enhancing Showse Park
Located in the Vermilion-on-the-Lake neighborhood, Showse Park spans nearly 20 acres and offers amenities such as a sand swimming beach, sports fields, courts, and a pavilion. The new trail, fitness equipment, and planned playground improvements further enhance the park’s appeal, creating a more inclusive and engaging space for all.
Promoting Active Lifestyles
City officials hope the Health and Fitness Trail will inspire residents to embrace more active lifestyles. Designed for individuals of all ages and fitness levels, the trail reflects Vermilion’s dedication to health and community.
Looking Ahead
The Health and Fitness Trail marks a significant milestone in the Showse Park Revitalization Project. Future developments, including the installation of fitness equipment and ongoing playground upgrades, are part of the city’s broader commitment to improving Vermilion’s public spaces.
Councilman Lucas emphasized the importance of community support in driving these initiatives forward. Residents are encouraged to participate in January’s fundraiser and take advantage of the new trail, which stands as a testament to Vermilion’s investment in wellness and recreation.
As Showse Park evolves into a hub for activity and connection, it continues to reflect the spirit of Vermilion: a town that thrives on progress, collaboration, and community pride.
