A home under construction on Edgewater Drive was damaged sometime overnight between May 31 and June 1, with multiple windows shattered and a red bicycle reportedly stolen from the property.
The incident was reported to police at 1:41 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, and logged as a criminal damaging case. According to scanner traffic and dispatch logs, the homeowner advised that the residence was still being built when the damage occurred.
Unofficially, neighbors have noted that a party may have taken place near the construction site the previous night, and some speculated it could be connected to a nearby house fire reported around the same timeframe. However, police have not confirmed any connection between the two incidents, and the case remains under investigation.
The damaged home is located near another newly built residence on the west end of Edgewater, just past the neighborhood’s small convenience store. The home had recently been framed and featured a set of large back windows that were visibly damaged following the break-in.
One nearby resident expressed concern, saying the damage is a discouraging setback for those making major investments in Vermilion’s lakefront neighborhoods.
As of Sunday afternoon, police had not released suspect information or confirmed whether any arrests have been made.
