Second grader runs candy venture

VERMILION — A 7-year-old local entrepreneur has received the Vermilion Chamber Foundation’s inaugural Young Entrepreneur Grant for developing a candy vending machine business.
Luca Cammarata, who will enter second grade at Vermilion Elementary School, received the $250 grant for his work with Luca’s Candy Cartel LLC. The foundation said the award recognizes his initiative, responsibility, work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit.
Luca operates the business with help from his father, Vito Cammarata, who serves as business manager and handles its legal and administrative responsibilities. Luca helps maintain the machines and works to expand the business.
His interest in business began at West River Paddle Sports, which his family operates. Luca has helped clean kayaks, greet customers and identify problems that need to be addressed.
The foundation said Luca learned the value of hard work from his parents, Hallie and Vito Cammarata. His mother has encouraged his entrepreneurial interests, while his father helps oversee the vending business.
Luca also donated a gumball machine to the Vermilion Chamber office. Visitors can purchase gum from the machine to support the business.
When asked about his favorite part of the business and his plans for the grant, Luca said, “Getting the coins, checking the machines and putting more candy into the machines. I plan on spending the grant on more candy machines to expand my business.”
