Tracks reopen as cleanup continues
VERMILION — A Norfolk Southern coal train experienced a railcar incident early Tuesday morning in Vermilion, spilling coal onto the tracks and temporarily disrupting rail traffic.
The incident happened about 6 to 6:30 a.m. Oct. 6 while the train was traveling at a low speed, according to Vermilion Fire Chief Bill Brown.
Brown said the bottom of one of the coal cars gave way, causing coal to spill onto the railroad tracks. The car also separated from the train and had to be removed from the rail.
No injuries were reported.
Norfolk Southern representatives were at the site Tuesday afternoon and working on the cleanup.
A Norfolk Southern representative said the tracks had reopened and trains were able to operate through the area. No timeline was provided for when the cleanup would be completed.
