Grant applications move forward
VERMILION — Vermilion City Council accepted $150,000 in state funding for the next phase of the Showse Park sports complex during a special meeting July 13.
Council unanimously approved the funding award through the state capital budget’s Community Projects Fund. The money will support the third phase of the Showse Park revitalization and transformation project.
Council President Jeff Lucas said immediate approval would help the city meet deadlines connected with the bid package and asphalt production.
Council also approved applications for funding through the Ohio NatureWorks program and Erie County’s EPIC Convention and Visitors Bureau grant program. The NatureWorks application faced a July 17 submission deadline.
Members briefly discussed which parking-lot improvements were associated with each grant before unanimously approving both applications as emergency measures.
Council also approved the use of electronic transactions through the Lorain County Auditor. A resolution concerning a shore structure in Lake Erie remained tabled.
No vote was recorded on the proposed adoption of the Erie County Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan. Council members questioned whether they had enough time to review the approximately 850-page document and discussed the need to receive supporting materials before being asked to vote.
Councilman Homer Taft said his concern was not directed at Clerk of Council Melanie Wood, but at being asked to consider legislation without first receiving the related grant applications. Councilman Alec Bonawit agreed that members should receive the documents earlier so they can make more informed decisions.
