Vermilion police add two part-time officers

Former chief returns as detective

VERMILION — Vermilion Police have added two part-time officers, including former police Chief Chris Hartung, who is returning to the department as a detective.

Police Chief Scott Holmes announced the appointments in a department Facebook post.

Hartung was sworn in Oct. 14. He retired as police chief April 10 after 27 years of service. Holmes said Hartung will serve as a part-time detective and assist with other duties within the department.

Officer Bryan Smith was sworn in Sept. 24 by Judge Kenneth Lieux.

Smith has previous law enforcement experience and serves as a lieutenant with the Vermilion Fire Department.

Holmes said Smith is completing his field training and is expected to begin road patrol duties in the near future.

Holmes welcomed both officers, saying their experience will benefit the department and the community.
