Parks board adopts new department logo

Design marks new director’s first meeting

VERMILION — The Vermilion Parks and Recreation Board approved a new department logo Tuesday, Oct. 20, during recreation director Chloe Roth’s first board meeting since beginning her new position earlier this month.

Roth presented the design as part of an effort to establish a recognizable identity for the department while expanding communication with residents through social media.

The circular logo features Vermilion’s familiar schooner, lighthouse, Lake Erie waterfront and sunset, along with images representing recreational activities. The design incorporates the city’s existing blue and gold colors.

Roth said she wanted the department to have its own identity while maintaining a connection to the city’s established branding.

Board members expressed support for the design, noting that it retained recognizable elements of Vermilion’s identity while distinguishing the Parks and Recreation Department.

The board unanimously approved a motion to adopt the logo for department communications, social media and other uses.

Expanding community outreach

Roth told board members she has already established Facebook and Instagram pages for the department but had held off on posting until receiving feedback on the proposed logo.

She said the accounts will help promote recreational programs, share announcements and provide residents with a central source for department information.

Social media could also allow the department to survey residents about recreational opportunities, including programs they would like to see offered.

Roth began working in the position during the second week of October and said she has spent her first days establishing contacts with community organizations and familiarizing herself with department operations.

She has also been preparing for the upcoming youth basketball season, with registration expected to begin during the second week of November.

Board members discussed the importance of distributing registration information through local schools, libraries and social media to reach as many families as possible.

Roth said she hopes to continue meeting with board members individually to learn more about department operations, finances and future priorities.

The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Vermilion Municipal Court Complex.
