Traffic, parking concerns prompt new plans
VERMILION — The Vermilion Beach Market could undergo significant changes in 2027, including a shorter event, fewer vendors and free shuttle service, as organizers work to address traffic and parking concerns following this year’s market.
Organizer Anne Binder presented the proposed changes to the Vermilion Parks and Recreation Board on Tuesday, Oct. 20, outlining a plan intended to reduce congestion around Sherod Park and improve pedestrian safety.
The board did not approve the event, instead requesting additional discussions with law enforcement and other officials before moving forward.
Smaller event, fewer vendors
Binder said organizers want to reduce the market from two days to one, with the 2027 event proposed for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7.
The event would remain at Sherod Park, but the number of vendors would be reduced substantially.
This year’s market featured 107 vendors, compared with 108 the previous year. Organizers now propose limiting participation to approximately 60 to 75 vendors.
The market would also occupy a smaller portion of the park, primarily the northwest quadrant, rather than spreading across the entire western section.
Food trucks would be permitted near the park’s electrical facilities, but other vehicles would no longer be allowed on grassy areas for setup.
Vendors would be permitted to set up the evening before the event, with overnight security provided by an Erie County sheriff’s deputy.
Parking and shuttle service
One of the largest proposed changes involves where visitors would park.
Under the plan, parking at Sherod Park would be restricted to vehicles displaying disability parking permits and approximately a dozen market staff vehicles.
The temporary public parking area used during previous markets would also be eliminated, although limited space would remain available for vendor vehicles and trailers.
Grace United Methodist Church has offered approximately 150 parking spaces for overflow parking.
Additional parking would be available at Vermilion High School’s stadium, where visitors could board a free shuttle to the market.
Binder said she has spoken with Superintendent Wes Weaver and received permission to use the stadium for the shuttle operation.
The proposed shuttle would travel from the stadium toward the park, with drop-off locations near Grace United Methodist Church or the Erie Blacktop property.
Organizers would cover the cost of the service, although a transportation provider and final route have not yet been established.
Binder said the changes are intended to reduce congestion along U.S. Route 6 and Coen Road.
Both roads would remain open during the event. Organizers also want no-parking signs along Coen Road and plan to continue using Erie County sheriff’s deputies to direct traffic and assist pedestrians near the intersection with Lake Road.
Further safety review requested
Board members acknowledged the proposed changes but requested that the involved agencies review the plan before the board approves the event.
Binder said she had already shared the proposal with Vermilion Township officials and discussed portions of it with other local representatives.
However, she acknowledged that she had not yet spoken directly with Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth about the revised arrangements.
Board members suggested bringing together representatives from the sheriff’s office, township and other involved organizations to ensure the proposed traffic and parking arrangements are workable.
The discussion also addressed the possibility of bad weather. Binder said the market would remain a rain-or-shine event, with no Sunday rain date because of church activities.
Although the proposed Aug. 7 date remains available, the board wants the additional safety discussions completed before granting final approval.
Binder indicated she would work to arrange a meeting with the involved parties within the next week or two.
The proposed changes would substantially alter the market’s previous format, particularly the number of vendors, available parking and movement of visitors into and out of Sherod Park.
