What Is a Blue Moon? Why Tonight’s Full Moon Is So Rare!

Blue Supermoon

A special event in the night sky is happening on August 19, 2024—it’s called a Blue Moon. But don’t let the name fool you; the moon won’t actually turn blue. A Blue Moon is when we have an extra full moon in a season. Normally, there are three full moons in each season, but sometimes we get four, and that third one is called a Blue Moon. This only happens every two to three years, which makes it a rare event.

This Blue Moon is also a Supermoon, which means it will look bigger and brighter than usual because it’s closer to Earth. Even though it’s called a Blue Moon, the moon will still look its usual bright white. However, the name “Blue Moon” comes from old traditions, and it’s become a way to describe something that doesn’t happen very often.

This August’s Blue Moon is a great chance to look up at the sky and see something special. The next one like this won’t happen again until 2027, so make sure to check it out!
