Celebrating the Life of David Frank Workman Sr.

David Frank Workman Sr., a beloved member of the Vermilion community, passed away on February 26, 2025, at the age of 91. Though he spent the past four years in Kentucky to be closer to family, Vermilion was his home for 54 years, a place where he built lifelong friendships and left a lasting impact.

Born on December 7, 1933, in Saxton, PA, Dave was the only son among five children raised on the Workman Dairy Farm. Those early years instilled in him a strong work ethic, a love for community, and a deep appreciation for family—values he carried with him throughout his life.

Dave married the love of his life, Joanne (Porter) Workman, on June 4, 1966. Together, they were the ultimate supporters of their two sons, dedicating countless hours cheering them on in their wrestling careers. Their love and devotion to family were at the core of everything they did.

A proud veteran, Dave served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1958 as a Jump Master in the 11th Airborne Division. Stationed in Germany, his sharp skills in shorthand and typing led him to serve as a General’s aide—just one of many ways he proved his dedication and adaptability.

Vermilion knew Dave best for his unwavering commitment to the Amvets community. He was not just a member—he was a driving force. In the 1970s, Dave mortgaged his family home to help establish Post 22 in Vermilion, ensuring veterans had a space to gather and support one another. He later served as a State Commander and dedicated years to the scholarship committee, helping young people pursue their dreams. In honor of his contributions, the reception hall at Post 22 bears his name—a lasting tribute to his service.

Beyond his work with the Amvets, Dave was known for his love of sports and social gatherings. He played in an adult soccer league, enjoyed trivia nights, and never missed an opportunity to cheer on his Pittsburgh Steelers. Gardening was another passion, a hobby that reflected his patience and care for the world around him.

More than anything, Dave loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Merisa and Kai. Whether sharing stories, offering words of wisdom, or simply being present, he was a guiding light in their lives.

Dave leaves behind a legacy of dedication, love, and service. He is survived by his sons RH Workman of Mt. Washington, KY, and Frank Workman (Tina) of Union, KY; his cherished grandchildren Merisa and Kai; his sister Barbara Kay Hammond of Saxton, PA; many nieces, nephews, and close friends, including Rachel and Ariana Ortega and longtime companions David and Rena Lee.

He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Joanne, his parents Robert and Edith Workman, and his sisters Betty Ruth Kifer, Alice “Nanky” Eichelberger, and Catherine Jean Mort.

A joint Celebration of Life for David and Joanne will take place at a later date at Amvets Post 22 in Vermilion, Ohio, where their impact will be honored by the community they loved so deeply.

Dave’s life was one of service, dedication, and unwavering love for his family, his friends, and his fellow veterans. May we continue to carry his spirit forward in the bonds of friendship, in the communities we build, and in the legacies we leave behind.
