After more than two decades of service to Vermilion Local Schools, Assistant Principal John (Jay) Lukasko will retire effective August 18, 2025.
Lukasko spent 20 years as a social studies teacher at Vermilion High School before stepping into administration, where he has served as assistant principal for the past several years. Known for his calm presence and willingness to tackle any task, he has earned the respect of both students and staff.

Superintendent Dr. David Hile praised Lukasko’s dedication and deep commitment to student relationships. “He is a very dedicated and conscientious school administrator who is willing to take on any task, big or small, and completes all assignments with thoroughness,” Hile said. “Most importantly, he understands and values building relationships with students… He truly lives our vision of every adult helping every child learn and grow every day.”
Lukasko’s retirement comes just weeks after Vermilion High School Principal Jennifer Bengele submitted her resignation. She will continue to serve until till June 30th. With both top leadership positions turning over this summer, the high school is preparing for a major administrative transition.

Staff and students are expected to honor Lukasko’s contributions as the school year draws to a close.
