Vermilion Police Blotter: May 27 – June 1, 2025

From the desk of Police Chief Chris Hartung: The Vermilion Police Department continues to diligently address community safety concerns, responding swiftly and effectively to incidents as they arise. Below is a summary of recent calls and activities handled by our officers.

Monday, May 27
11:50 a.m. – 4700 block Liberty Ave.: A credit card found in a parking lot was turned over to authorities.
6:14 p.m. – Erie County Jail: Officers served an active warrant.
7:56 p.m. – 5700 block Liberty Ave.: Telecommunications harassment complaint was reported.
8:40 p.m. – 4700 block Liberty Ave.: A caller reported a shoplifting incident. The suspect was identified, and the investigation remains open.

Tuesday, May 28
12:51 a.m. – Vermilion Rd.: A malfunctioning railroad gate was reported and Norfolk Southern was notified.
8:21 a.m. – Liberty Ave.: Officers performed a welfare check on an individual reportedly walking in traffic and talking to himself. He was identified as the suspect in the previous day’s shoplifting complaint.

Wednesday, May 29
5:01 p.m. – Liberty Ave.: Officers responded to a motor vehicle accident.
5:22 p.m. – 600 block Vermilion Rd.: Theft of a boat trailer reported. Investigation continues.

Thursday, May 30
9:14 a.m. – Sunnyside Rd.: A driver was stopped for a moving violation, found to have a suspended license, and was arrested.
10:06 a.m. – 4200 block Liberty Ave.: A wallet was turned in to police.
3:09 p.m. – 300 block Berkshire Rd.: Telecommunications harassment was reported.
3:25 p.m. – Highbridge Rd.: Another driver stopped for a moving violation was found to be driving under suspension and arrested.
3:36 p.m. – 1100 block Jefferson St.: Attempted burglary captured on video. Suspect did not gain entry; investigation ongoing.
3:42 p.m. – 4700 block Liberty Ave.: Joint tobacco compliance investigation with Erie County Health Department resulted in one business being cited for underage tobacco sales.

Friday, May 31
12:19 p.m. – Liberty Ave.: Another motor vehicle accident reported.
3:59 p.m. – Highbridge Rd.: Citation issued for parking violation.
8:54 p.m. – Main Street Beach: Access gate malfunction caused vehicle damage.

Saturday, June 1
7:27 a.m. – 200 block Fairfax Rd.: Unattended fire led to a shed blaze in a backyard. The owner was cited.
1:41 p.m. – 3900 block Edgewater Dr.: Vandalism at new house construction site with significant damage reported; investigation continues.
5:43 p.m. – 600 block Main St.: Shoplifting incident reported; suspect located and stolen property returned.
